Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. That prize, which went to Green Book last year, is a solid indicator that Jojo is a major Oscar contender. With the festival wrapped up and the fall movie season getting underway, Lainey Lui (one of my favourite people in the world) joins me to breakdown Jojo and the other awards season contenders that premiered at TIFF. You know Lainey from CTV’s ETalk and The Social , as well as her blog Lainey Gossip . You might have also caught us together on CTV’s Your Morning , kicking knowledge on the Golden Globes and the Oscars. In this podcast, we get into Hustlers, Joker, Just Mercy, Knives Out, Marriage Story, Parasite and Uncut Gems, figuring out where we fall on some of this year’s divisive films. Enjoy and remember to follow Lainey Lui on Twitter and Instagram at @LaineyGossip. P.S. I forgot to hit record when we got started, so please excuse the abrupt introduction.

I didn't love Hereditary. So I brought in Film Critic Adam Nayman to play counsellor and walk me through those feelings. We discuss the film and its relationship to "Elevated Horror", the hype and comparisons to William Friedkin's The Exorcist, the branding from the cool kids at A24, and the wide gap in reception between RottenTomatoes (currently 92%) and CinemaScore (D+). This is an exhaustive, spoiler-heavy look at a film some are calling the scariest movie in decades. Follow Adam Nayman on Twitter and keep up with his writing in Cinemascope, The Ringer, Reverse Shot, Sight and Sound and Little White Lies. Also order yourself a copy of Adam's book, Ben Wheatley: Confusion and Carnage , which is not unrelated to the current discussion. Also (and this is unrelated), preorder Adam's new book, The Coen Brothers: This Book Really Ties the Films Together . I don't write books so just follow me on Twitter and right here at www.justsayrad.com
